Conservation systems like DOFF and Nebulous Water use controlled temperature and minimal water volume, meaning surfaces are not saturated. This helps prevent moisture from being forced into mortar joints or internal cavities — a key consideration when working on historic or solid-wall buildings.

Yes. Soft stones such as sandstone and limestone require particularly sensitive treatment. High-pressure or abrasive methods can easily erode these materials. We use low-pressure steam and, where appropriate, TORC vortex technology to gently remove contamination while protecting the stone’s natural surface. Every project begins with a small test patch to determine the safest and most effective approach.

Absolutely. Test panels are an essential part of conservation cleaning. Before full works begin, we carry out controlled on-site testing to assess how the stone or brick responds to different temperatures and pressures. This ensures the selected method achieves the desired result without risking damage to historic fabric. Test panels also provide reassurance for property owners, architects, and conservation officers.

When carried out incorrectly, aggressive cleaning methods can weaken or dislodge lime mortar joints. However, conservation-grade steam systems are specifically designed to protect lime-based materials. Low-pressure steam cleaning avoids forcing water into joints and does not rely on abrasive force. By selecting the correct temperature and pressure settings, we ensure that lime mortar remains intact and undamaged throughout the cleaning process.
